Breezy Point NY,
The first annual Uncle Richie Memorial Paddle for MS was held this past Saturday Nov. 28. The paddle was started by Dennis Farrell in memory of his brother Richie Farrell who passed away a few years ago and to raise money for MS. Dennis a retired NYC Firefighter, Surfer, Shaper has been long distance paddling for years to stay in shape during flat spells. The paddle was originally planned to be a 7 mile out and back course from the USCG station at Fort Tilden to the tip of Breezy Point. Friday night and Saturday saw winds gusting in excess of 50 mph out of the west, straight in the face of the first leg. A decision was made that the paddle would be cut in half and start at the tip of Breezy and head back towards the USCG Station and the Marine Park Bridge, 3.5 mi. The paddle was not easy at all, even with the wind at their backs. Congratulations to Dennis and to all who participated. It was for a great cause and next year surely will see a greater turnout!
